Come join us on a spectacular ecotour to Ecuador. This andean nation has become a famous destination for ecotourists and birders alike because of its extraordinary biodiversity packed into a small and accessible land area. Over 1600 bird species and 4000 orchid species are nestled in an area the size of Colorado, which is twice the number of bird species found in Costa Rica and twice that found in the US and Canada combined! This is due to an extremely varied topography, climate, diverse habitats and bioregions. Here the Andes rise majestically between the coastal plain and the legendary Amazon basin creating more than 40 major ecosystems and 9 endemic bird areas. In one day we can be marveling at the alpine adaptations of plants in the frigid páramo below the snowline, descend through lush orchid-rich cloudforest and arrive in the steamy and amazing Amazon rainforest. We will traverse from the Amazon to the Andes in search of many birds, plants and mammals. Many indigenous groups have lived and adapted to the diverse ecosystems and we will have a chance to be with lowland Quichua as well as highland Otavaleño Indians.

“The marine biology course changed my life. Niki Crowell taught us the fine arts of marine invertebrates and the wonderful way the ocean smells. She ignited the oceans for me and she is the reason I have my profession.”
